Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a type of therapy where a person or group is guided by a trained therapist into a calm and focused state, often called hypnosis. In this state, the mind becomes more open to helpful suggestions than usual.

During a session, the therapist uses simple and clear suggestions to support the client’s goals. For instance, this can help change negative thought patterns, reduce limiting beliefs, and build more positive ways of thinking and reacting.

As a result, the main goal is to create real changes in mindset and behaviour. Over time, this can help clients build healthier habits and more positive thinking patterns, so they can move closer to their goals.

At the same time, a professional hypnotherapist has a duty of care to their clients. This means they only offer services they are trained to provide, stay within their level of skill, and always act in the client’s best interests.

What makes hypnotherapy successful?

To begin with, a client must truly want to change and choose hypnotherapy for themselves. In other words, they should not do it just to please a partner, family member, or colleague. In fact, a hypnotherapist cannot control someone against their will, because change only happens when the client is willing.

Next, the best results happen when the client is open and willing to take part. For example, they should be ready to use their imagination, listen carefully, and follow the therapist’s guidance.

In addition, it helps when the client believes change is possible and feels they are making progress. On the other hand, strong doubt can make it harder for the process to work.

Who can hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy can help people reduce stress and anxiety that may stop them from showing up in daily life. For example, this could be in sport, work, social situations, or even getting out of bed in the morning.

As a result, people may feel calmer, more relaxed, more confident, and more in control. It can also help improve sleep.

Finally, hypnotherapy can support anyone who wants to change something in their mindset. Whether this is related to health, fitness, lifestyle, or certain medical concerns, it can make a real and noticeable difference.

Contraindications of Hypnotherapy

Contraindications of Hypnotherapy are situations where hypnotherapy may not be suitable or should only be used with caution.

Common contraindications include:

  • Severe mental health conditions, such as psychosis or schizophrenia, where reality perception may be significantly affected
  • Severe depression with suicidal thoughts, unless under the care of a qualified medical professional
  • Dissociative disorders, where hypnosis could potentially worsen symptoms
  • Epilepsy, in some cases, where deep relaxation or altered states may be a concern (medical advice should be sought)
  • Intoxication from alcohol or drugs, as this can affect awareness and responsiveness
  • Severe personality disorders, depending on severity and stability
  • Lack of consent or unwillingness to participate, as hypnotherapy only works with client cooperation

In all cases, a responsible hypnotherapist should carry out a full assessment and, if needed, refer the client to a GP or appropriate healthcare professional before proceeding.
